Everyone should love the Lenovo Y51oP (although I suspect Nibbles doesn't care for the model). It's a cheap, yet potent gaming laptop. The specs at this price mean some corners had to be cut slightly. My beef is this: the disc drive needs to be retightened every twenty discs or so or else it won't read. My dad just dug up his old CD collection (several thousand discs) and we're in the process of ripping everything. The process now includes a step between waiting for ripping to finish and starting another CD which is to sleep the computer, close it, turn it over and gently retighten the screw holding the CD reader in place. It's irritating. On the plus side, rare Fall bootlegs!

The next time the Y510 drops to around $700, I'm definitely picking one up just because how good they are for their price.

Another issue with the Y410 and 510p was that they used to have WiFi connectivity woes. I dunno if they've fixed that.

On a separate note, am I the only one who really prefers the aesthetic of the Y410 and Y510 over the new Y40 and Y50?

I am with you on the aesthetic front. I have had some WiFi troubles, but I live in a place that gets horrible internet service and everyone else has the same sorts of troubles as I do. I don't have those problems at school or tethering to my phone, so I betcha they fixed that. But I don't really know.

The Y400/500 chassis has been around awhile, so I might be thinking of its earlier iterations. You probably have the final iteration, and they probably did fix it.

I got mine fairly recently, but I think it's not the current-gen one. I don't doubt for a second that there was such an issue with WiFi connectivity somewhere along the line though.

Hey at least it comes with a disc reader of some form. My new laptop doesn't have one so I need to get an external reader at some point.

Couldn't you use some locktite to keep the screw secure?

While a cool laptop, I still miss my gateway P-7811FX being my primary laptop. It got retired to media PC duties as the 9800 GTS finally was too weak to game well. Had dual 500GB drives in Raid 0, had a C2X 9100 processor, 8GB of ram, a 1920x1200 screen and in general was just awesome for an initial buy of 800$ refurbished. Had to upgrade the processor, ram, an hard drives for about 400$ over the years but still, thing was a beast. 256-bit graphics chip that was basically an 8800GT desktop card but mobile.
